Curious about what Yahoo knows about you? Check it out here:
Here's an excellent WSJ article on just how pervasive ad tracking and targeting is:
The technology isn't perfect, though. Evidently Yahoo thinks I'm a 36-45 year old female. No wonder I prefer to play female characters in roleplaying games.
Still, if you want to opt out, here's a page with links to dozens of tracking networks' opt out pages:
Firefox apparently doesn't qualify for interest based ads. How sad for them. They also don't know much about me, other than that I look at yahoo movies a lot (which is true--I find it the simplest way to find out which movies are playing near me and when.)
Maybe they're just guessing that everyone is a 46-55 year old female? I mean, that's correct for me, but seeing as how they're guessing that for all of us...
Note that my alleged age was 36-45, so they're guessing I'm younger than people I'm actually older than.
I suspect that for me, the fact that pregnancy & childbirth and parenting were two of my major interest categories had something to do with their guess. However, the fact that the most frequent yahoo site I visit is flikr for my wife's pictures may also have something to do with it.
We don't share computers. I use firefox, and it has interest based ad categories for me. Maybe they're just skeptical of firefox on PCs?
